Map of The Battle of The Coral Sea

The Battle of the Coral Sea was fought in May 1942 and ended with a tactical victory for the Allied forces, the first naval success against the Japanese in the Pacific War.Whilst costly and indecisive, the Japanese fleet was sufficiently mauled to embarass the subsequent attack on Midway.

The objective of this amphibious task force was the New Guinea rather than the Queensland coast, but this was not known at the time and the belief that the fleet was tasked to invade Australia endured with the wartime generation. Fantin's correspondence makes no mention of the engagement, but he must have known of it and his express affection for the Australian people implies that he was cheered by it.
