Japanese I-8 Submarine Cruiser

The I class Japanese submarine cruisers were the largest vessels of their kind, deployed for long range raiding and reconnaisance. It was a midget submarine released by the I - 25 which penetrated Sydney Harbour and launched a float plane which scouted Melbourne and Hobart for naval targets. This class of submarine waged war on Australian sea lanes very effectively from 1942 - 4, prolonging the emergency opened by Pearl Harbour.
