Storming of the Winter Palace

The Storming of the Winter Palace, Pietrograd [25 October Old Style, 8 November New Style] effected the transfer of power from the Provisional Government to the Bolshevicks. Kerensky had left the Palace to rally support, leaving 13 ministers protected by about a 1,000 cadets and a women's battalion. After mounting effective resistance overnight, the defence was overrun in the early hours of the morning. The seizure of power gave enormous prestige to the Bolshevicks in a labour movement starved of news of events in Russia and cognizant only that the Bolshevicks had successfully mounted a revolution.
