Defenders of Ebert's Provisional Government January 1919
As in Russia so in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, the forces which overthrew the old autocratic states were divided between proponents of constitutionalism and revolutionary soviet power, divisions which were to mark the course of the twentieth century. In December 1918 the Social Democratic leader Ebert persuaded the Congress of Soldier's & Workers Councils to fix a date for elections for a Constituent assembly to draft a constitution. As an anarchist Fantin would have been skeptical about representative democracy, and sympathised with radicalism and revolutionary soviet institutions.
