Freicorp assault Berlin January 1919
Gustav Noske, Social Democratic Minister of War for the Provisional Government, provided for its defence from the Spartacist militia by recruiting demobilised units, the Freicorp. They entered Berlin on January 11 and cleared the city of opposition to the Provisional Government by the 15th. Freicorp soldiers murdered Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg at the climax of these operations, an atrocity which echoed throughout the European labour movement, compounding its divisions.
